The sport of Airsoft allows one to participate in a game of both strategy and active shooting. There are many different types of Airsoft game and the Airsoft guns that one chooses to use is dependent on the type of game they are playing. In games where there will be close encounters, one may find that a smaller Airsoft pistol will meet their needs. Other games may require the use of a bigger gun.

Unlike paintball games which are normally not highly organized, most Airsoft games are structured. The goal, as with paintball is to shoot somebody, however there are usually other objectives as well. The type of airsoft guns that are chosen plays a pivotal role in how well they are able to play the game that they are in.

Airsoft is a game that has gained in popularity the world over. There are many national and international competitions of Airsoft played on a yearly basis. The airsoft guns are made as exact replicas of real weapons and provide the same realistic weight that the real weapons do.

If one can imagine the many different types of guns made throughout the world they will begin to get an idea of the number of Airsoft guns that are made. However, most airsoft guns are made giving an individual a choice of an Airsoft Electric Gun (AEG), an Airsoft Gas Gun (AGG), or an Airsoft Springer (a manual gun). The most affordable gun is the springer, however it is purchased by collectors on a more regular basis than by players. This gun is appropriate for close range shooting but does not have the velocity or range of the larger and faster guns.

The differences in the guns and the options and add-ons that are available become very apparent in open day skirmishes. These skirmishes usually take place in standard Airsoft fields and are composed of groups of individuals who may or may not know each other. Usually in these games there are some players with a great deal of experience and some players who are just trying out the game for the first time.

People who have been playing Airsoft for awhile usually find that they want more range and velocity from their airsoft guns. To meet this objective there are several add-ons and options available for all the guns. The hop-up is the most commonly added feature. This component of the gun increases the velocity and range that the bb will go by making the bb spin when it exits the barrel of the gun.

These guns use a battery pack which turns the gears that shoot the bb. There is an optional electrical blow back that can also be added to the guns that will give the gun recoil. Other options allow the gun to make the sound of a shot when the bbs are shot from the gun.

For a newcomer to the Airsoft game one will see a multitude of guns and options available to make playing more exciting. There are Airsoft Gas Guns (AGGs) which are run using CO2 gas. Some of the AR series in gas are more versatile than the AEGs, but in colder climates do not respond as well when used. Gas must be warm to function in the gun properly.

When first starting in the game of Airsoft one may want to rent their guns at first until they find the gun that fits their needs and skill level. This will allow an individual to develop a skill and strategy that will make the game exciting and fun.
