Taking pictures of patient’s teeth has suddenly become much easier with a technology called dental digital imaging. The x-ray from a century ago is quickly being replaced by cutting edge technology where both the patient and dentist benefit. This technology is redefining how to approach dental techniques.

Patients and dentists should be relieved that there is now reduced exposure to radiation. The process is very patient friendly technology. The chemical processing has been done away with due to the use of x-ray sensors rather than film. Consequently the imaging is fast and is visible in both 2D and 3D presentations.

The images can also be enhanced and as a result are much more precise since the resolution is better than the old x-ray version. There are no longer any large format charts needed since the images are stored in the computer.

Images are taken via an apparatus that is ergonomically shaped similar to a curved wand where the tapered end fits easily into the patient’s mouth. The end reaches those hard to reach areas. There are about twelve LEDs incorporated into the unit for lighting the interior of the mouth.

The camera has an auto focusing feature and the apparatus is connected to the computer. The large depth of field permits better resolution so that never before have images been so accurate. Many companies are manufacturing this device and there are slight variations with each model. Some for example require a capture card and some do not.

Dental digital imaging is a fast growing field of study. More dentists will be using this as time goes by. Anything that is healthier for the patient must be adopted. Dentists too enjoy the advantages of this apparatus since results appear more quickly and all data is kept in the computer thus saving space in the office. The reproduction of copies is easy. Much time is saved and increased accuracy makes it easier for the dentist to more accurately analyze the information. Read more about: dental digital imaging
